Yūichirō and Mikaela meet again after 3 years, and try to save each other from vampires and humans. After 4 years of coexistence Yūichirō, Mikaela and the other children tried to escape outside the city but were killed by a vampire, except for Yūichirō who managed to escape into the humans world, leaving him behind in tears. They, like the other children of the orphanage, are taken by the vampires and transferred to the vampire city of Sanguinem, where they are treated like livestock. Mika and Yūichirō meet on Christmas Day 2012, the same day a virus that wiped out the majority of the world's population was diffused. The reasons why Mika didn't reciprocate Akane's feelings aren't specified: perhaps he saw her as a simple member of his family or already at that time he didn't like girls.
However in the light novel it's revealed that Akane, a deceased member of his family, had a crush on Mika however he did not reciprocate. He has never shown attraction to anyone in the manga/anime/ligh novel other than Yuichiro. He has been known to keep to himself in most of the anime and manga, in scenes depicting him sitting alone.
